Winter Jackets Today But Spring Will Surge Back
There is a lot of bad news in the short term forecast but hang in there, we will be warming up before too long.
Here is the bad news:
Close to a record cold high today (I expect a daytime high of 45° and the record is 42°)
Wind chills today in the 30s
Close to a a record low tonight (I expect a low of 29° and the record is 27° set in 1983)
Below average temperatures through Wednesday next week
High temperatures this afternoon will fail to get out of the 40s. Expect to experience some 30s right along the lakefront. These temperatures are more like the middle of March than early May. Highs will be 20° to 25° degrees below average. With mainly clear skies and lighter winds tonight we'll see temperatures tumble fast.
Expect lows tonight in the lower 30s in the city and middle to upper 20s in the burbs. Freeze warning goes into effect at midnight and lasts until 7 am Saturday morning for most of areas.
Now some good news...
Only a few periods of rain over the next seven days (Sunday and next Thursday & Friday in particular)
Plenty of sunshine Saturday, Monday and Tuesday
A slow but steady warm up from Wednesday into next weekend
The trend in the long range outlook is for a pattern shift to some warmer weather. While the 6-10 day temperature probability forecast has us "in the blue" and favored for below average temps overall the 8-14 day outlook has us near normal. That is the first time one of these outlooks does not have any shade of blue over Chicago in a long time. That in itself is worth celebrating.
The warm up for next weekend should be significant as 70s surge northward through Illinois and up into southern Wisconsin. The GFS forecast for next Saturday has a few spots flirting with 80°.
