Turning Up The Heat While Air Quality Drops

Thursday was the tenth time O'Hare hit a high of 90° or more. Most of the next at least seven days should see highs near or above 90°. The humidity levels have remained tolerable so far but that could change next week.

Today's highs are again expected to reach the lower 90s for most areas but cooler lower to middle 80s along the lakefront.

Dew points are a good measurement of the moisture in the air. Today's dew points should be in the 50s which is still fairly comfortable. The GFS meteogram show dew points steadily increasing though through the weekend into next week. They are forecast to climb to the lower 70s by the middle of next week. If that verifies, next week will be more steamy than this week and humidity levels will be oppressive by next Wednesday or Thursday.

It is another Air Pollution Action Day. The air quality index will again be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category today.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency advises "active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors."

The IEPA also issued a special statement regarding the 4th of July:

Locally higher particulate levels can occur near and downwind of fireworks displays. Persons, especially those susceptible to elevated fine particulates, should take precautions to avoid exposure to fireworks emissions.

The day to day changes in the forecast will be subtle. Essentially, we are looking at a hot and dry forecast through early next week. There is a slight chance for a hit or miss thunderstorm today and it might be a couple of degrees cooler on the 4th because of a northeast wind but it is basically "what you see is what you get". The best chances for showers or thunderstorms won't be until the middle or end of next week and even then the chances aren't high.

The longer range forecast keeps us warmer than average through at least the middle of the month. The 6-10 and 8-14 day forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from July 8th through the 16th.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Today: Mostly sunny & hot High: 91 (83 Lakefront)

Saturday: Mostly sunny Low: 70 High: 89 (80 Lakefront)

Sunday: Partly to mostly sunny Low: 71 High: 91 (83 Lakefront)

Monday: Partly to mostly sunny Low: 72 High: 92 (84 Lakefront)

Tuesday: Partly cloudy, sct. t-storm possible Low: 72 High: 93 (86 Lakefront)

Wednesday: Partly cloudy, sct. t-storm possible Low: 72 High: 93

Thursday: Partly cloudy, sct. t-storm possible Low: 73 High: 94
