Terrific Tuesday With A Break From Dog Days Of Summer

I had help with today's blog. My daughter's dog "Piper" is staying with me for a few days. She's a black lab that won't face the fact she isn't as small as she used to be. She was right by my side doing some fact checking for me this morning.

Today will be a rare day by the summer of 2020 standards. It will be only the 11th day out of 78 that has seen a high in the 70s. 90% of days this June, July and August have been above average.

Today's highs will top out in the upper 70s but only the middle 70s along the lakefront. The break from the heat doesn't last long. We will be back up to near 90° by the end of the week.

The northeast winds that will keep us a bit cooler today will also whip up some big waves (3 to 5 feet) and generate strong rip currents along the southern shores of Lake Michigan. A beach hazards statement is in effect for the shoreline today because of dangerous swimming conditions.

It's been a warm summer and it's been a dry summer too. Rainfall at O'Hare is 2.24" below average since the start of June. Our next good chance of rain doesn't come until late Saturday into early Sunday morning.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post the rainfall deficit will be probably be growing over at least the next week. The 6-10 day precipitation probability forecast has us outlooked for below average rainfall overall from August 23rd through the 27th. The 8 to 14 day outlook shows some promise for more rainfall by the end of the month with a flip towards an above average precipitation forecast overall from August 25th through the 31st.

The longer range temperature probability forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall for the end of August. Only a small sliver of the northern tier of the US is outlooked for below average temperatures during this period.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Beach Hazards Statement From Through 10 PM Today
