So Long 70s, It's Back To The 50s
It's the same old story we have seen so often since April. It's a cool pattern that made the month of April the first to be below average since November last year. It looks like this cool pattern will continue for at least a few more weeks. A ridge of high pressure west with the jet stream surging north there and forcing it to buckle south across the eastern half of the country. The longer range forecasts have us outlooked for cooler than average temperatures overall through the middle of May.
That's a lot of blue on both maps with the highest probability of below average temperatures centered over the Great Lakes and New England. This cool spring pattern means today's highs may fail to hit 50° along the lakefront with a breeze off of Lake Michigan. It will feel more like late March than early May with highs more than 10° below average.
The good news is most of the week should be rain free. The best chances of rain will be Tuesday and Sunday. There will be some sun today but more expected especially Thursday and Friday and into the start of the weekend. The meteogram's cloud cover forecast below shows a lot of blue at all three levels (low, middle & high) from Thursday through Saturday. That should translate into plenty of sunshine for those days.
The total rainfall accumulation forecast through the weekend squeezes out about round a half inch of rain here with higher amounts staying south and west of the Chicago area. This will hopefully allow rain swollen rivers and streams to fall back below flood stage.
