Snow Back In The Forecast But So Are 60s
First the bad news...
The next few days will feel more like March than April with highs 10-15° below average. We will have snow snow and graupel* showers today, more light snow possible early Wednesday and then possibly a more significant snow by early Friday.
The GFS total snowfall accumulation forecast through Friday afternoon lays down a swath of moderate to heavy snow just south of the city and through central Illinois. That snow would fall late Thursday night into the morning hours Friday. That axis of heavier snow needs to be watched closely. Right now this model is spitting out a dusting in Chicago with higher amounts south but a shift north could mean a lot more here.
Now the good news! We should be near 60 or above this weekend. Lower 60s look likely for Sunday which would be a smidge above average. Most of the weekend looks to be dry too. Slight chance for some light rain late Sunday.
Could we be turning the corner on spring by the end of this month? The long range forecast for May, June and July offers hope with above average temperatures favored overall for us and most of the country during the period.
Soft, small pellets formed when supercooled water droplets (at a temperature below 32°F) freeze onto a snow crystal, a process called riming. If the riming is particularly intense, the rimed snow crystal can grow to an appreciable size, but remain less than 0.2 inches. Graupel is also called snow pellets or soft hail, as the graupel particles are particularly fragile and generally disintegrate when handled.
