Severe Storms Possible Today

This week could start off stormy but it won't be a washout today. There will be some dry hours but when storms fire up late this afternoon they could be strong or even severe in spots. The Storm Prediction Center has us in a "marginal" risk of severe weather. It is the lowest of the risk categories. The primary threat today from severe storms would be damaging winds and large hail. There could also be some torrential downpours.

The hourly forecast for O'Hare has the greatest threat of storms between midday and midnight. The stronger storms would most likely occur late this afternoon and into early tonight.

It will be a warm and muggy Monday with highs in the middle to upper 80s but cooler lakeside. A cold front will pass through tonight and set us up for cooler weather during the middle of the week.

We will have a couple of cooler days this week when highs drop back below average on Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs will slide back into the upper 70s for the middle of the week. This has been a rather warm June overall though. 17 out of 21 days have been above average. O'Hare is a bit more than 5° above average so far this month. We have had six days with highs of 90° or hotter. That means nearly a third of this month has seen sweltering heat. The longer range forecast show the heat will continue possibly well into July.

The 6-10 day and 8-14 day temperature probability forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from June 27th through July 5th.

A longer range outlook from a multi-model ensemble suggest that heat could extend through the week ending July 10th. It shows the Chicago area with a temperature anomaly for that week between .5° to 1.5° above average or roughly 1° to 3° Fahrenheit.
