Now This Is More Like It

Friday was the coolest day in nearly two weeks. Nine of the past twelve days have seen highs of 90° or hotter. The scorching July heat has pushed temperatures for the month to nearly 8° above average. So the summer of 2020 continues to boil following a June that was 5° above average. Get set for a return to more "normal" summer weather in Chicago for at least the next week.

It was a different story 25 years ago today. July 11th, 1995 was the beginning of a horrible heat wave that killed more than 700 people.

The heat expected over the next seven days will be about or a bit above average. No extremes expected through Friday next week. Today's highs should top out in the middle or upper 80s.

The heat index should not climb above 90 through the weekend. Dew points will be more tolerable in the lower to middle 60s for both Saturday and Sunday. Dew points are a good indicator of the amount of moisture in the air and the range we'll see this weekend is typical for summer in Chicago. Last week the dew points climbed to 70° and into the oppressive range.

The best chances for showers and thunderstorms will come late today into Sunday morning but only scattered stuff is expected. There is a low chance of some storms Wednesday and Wednesday night and then a better chance late next weekend on Sunday.

The longer range forecast brings the heat for the period of July 16th through the 24th. Both the 6-10 and 8-14 day temperature probability forecast have us favored for above average temperatures overall.

The longer range forecast for the end of the month has the midwest cooling off. The temperature anomaly forecast for the final week of July has a fairly strong signal for cooler than average temperatures to close out the month.

Here is my 7 day forecast:
