Not A Washout But Some Rain This Weekend

Hard to believe after the record shattering 9.51" of rain that fell in May we would be behind in rainfall so soon. O'Hare has picked up 2.24" of rain this June which is almost an inch and a half below average so far for the month. We will make up some of that deficit this weekend but while there will be occasional showers and thunderstorms there will be dry hours too.

June has been a warm month so far just under five degrees per day above average. Friday's high of 93° at O'Hare was the hottest day of the month thus far. Today's highs should be in the upper 80s. Cloud cover and rain at times will keep us a few degrees cooler than yesterday.

The showers and thunderstorms will come through in waves with some dry time between them. The hourly forecast for O'Hare shows the window with the highest threat of rain is between 1 pm today and around 3 am Sunday.

Some of the storms could be strong to even severe. The Storm Prediction Center has us in a marginal risk area for severe weather. The atmosphere will be unsettled today into tonight as a cold front approaches and then moves across the area.

The biggest threat in terms of severe weather is some damaging winds. The stronger storms should be isolated though. "Marginal risk" by definition means storms will be limited in duration and/or coverage and/or intensity. Fortunately, any pockets of heavier rain should be easily absorbed by ground that has been fairly dry the past few weeks.

Rainfall amount will be highly variable but in general the GFS model suggests about a third of an inch to three quarters of an inch of rain in total through Sunday afternoon. There could be a few locally heavy downpours though that exceed these amounts.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Sunday: Shower/t-storm possible early, partly cloudy Low: 68 High: 83

Monday: Mostly cloudy, on & off showers & t-storms Low: 66 High: 87 (82 Lakefront)
