More Sun & Fewer Storms This Weekend

Severe storms swept across the area yesterday evening. Nearly every county in northern Illinois and Indiana had a severe thunderstorm warning issued at some point on Friday. The stormy night culminated with eight counties spreading across two states (Illinois & Indiana) under a warning simultaneously. There were numerous reports of damaging winds in the 60-70 mph range. Trees fell on cars and power lines leading to outages. Large hail was reported in several locations too. Photographer @barrybutler9 posted this beautiful shot on twitter featuring lightning striking buildings in the city that is framed in a double rainbow. Amazing.

Saturday will feature more sunshine and fewer storms. Another day with above average temperatures today as highs climb into the middle 80s.

While storms won't be as widespread as Friday there will be a few that could become strong south of the city. A front is hung up across our far southern suburbs that could spark some storms that my produce some large hail, damaging winds and locally heavy downpours. The Storm Prediction Center has put areas south of I-80 in a marginal risk of severe weather.

Marginal risk means-

An area of severe storms of either limited organization and longevity, or very low coverage and marginal intensity.

After today the atmosphere settles down some more for Sunday. There is only a slight chance for a spotty shower or thunderstorm mainly later in the day. More active weather could return Sunday night into Monday but there is no indication now this will be as volatile a set up as Friday. Most of next week should be dry (and hot) with only a scattered shower or thunderstorm possible on a few days.

This upcoming week may end up being the warmest week of the year so far. Each day highs will be near 90°. The longer range forecasts keep the warmer than average weather coming well into July. The 6-10 and 8-14 day temperature probability forecasts have outlooked the midwest for above average temperatures overall from July 2nd through July 10th.

Here is my 7 day forecast:
