More Amazing August Weather

Tuesday was terrific with plenty of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. It was a rare day for this summer that was right at average in terms of temperatures. It was one of only 5 days this summer that was right at average. 90% of this summer has been above average. The average temperature for a day is the sum of the high and low for that day divided by two. Yesterday's high was 78° and the low as 66°. So the average temperature for Tuesday was 72° which is the average temperature for the middle of August. Today should be another day at or about average. The low at O'Hare was 63° and the high should be around 81° which would make for an average temperature today of 72°. A northeast breeze will make it a bit cooler along the lakefront with highs there in the upper 70s.

What is also rare for the middle of August is the comfortable levels of humidity we have been enjoying this week. Dew points should remain in the comfortable range with 50s expected through Friday. Those dew points will climb this weekend to the lower 60s to make it slightly more humid.

Speaking of rare...

Rainfall has been fairly rare too since the start of July. Rainfall is now down 3.36" below average going back to July 1st. The GFS model holds some hope for some at least scattered showers and thunderstorms late Saturday night into Sunday but the European model isn't as hopeful and keeps us mainly dry through the weekend.

The GFS precipitation accumulation forecast through midnight Sunday suggests anywhere from a tenth to just under a half inch of rain could fall between now and then. While the rainfall would be welcomed it will only put a dent in our deficit.

Looking longer range offers more hope for some rain. Both the 6-10 and 8-14 day precipitation probability forecast has us outlooked for above average precipitation from August 24th through September 1st.

Tracking temperatures longer range suggests there could be a switch to a cooler pattern by the start of September. The 6-10 day temperature probability forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from August 24th through the 29th while the 8-14 day forecast has us outlooked for cooler than average temperatures overall from August 26th through September 1st. Take that with several grains of salt though because there have been many times this summer a longer range forecast hinted at a cooler pattern to come that never materialized.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Today: Sunny skies High: 81 (76 Lakefront)

Thursday: Mostly sunny Low: 62 High: 84 (80 Lakefront)

Friday: Mostly sunny Low: 63 High: 87

Saturday: Mostly sunny Low: 65 High: 89

Sunday: Partly to mostly sunny, sct. t-storms possible Low: 67 High: 86

Monday: Mostly sunny Low: 65 High: 84

Tuesday: Mostly sunny Low: 66 High: 88
