Mild Start To May But Cool Pattern Lurks

With 70s today and near 70° Sunday, this will be the warmest weekend of the year so far. The only caveat is a spotty afternoon shower today, a few showers tonight and maybe a sprinkle or too early Sunday morning. Despite a few possible showers most of this weekend will be rain free.

Highs today will surge into the middle to upper 70s. There will be a mix of clouds and sun with the clouds building as the day goes on.

After our warmer weekend our highs fall back into the 50s for most of next week. This is the same cooler pattern that has prevailed through most of April. The longer range forecasts are now suggesting it could stick around through most of May.

There is a lot of blue showing up on both the 6-10 and 8-14 day temperature probability forecasts for the eastern half of the country. We have a high probability of seeing cooler than average temperatures through the middle part of May.

The latest monthly temperature probability forecast keeps us favored for an overall cooler than average month of May. Head west for heat. The southwest could broil this month after some spots there set all-time record highs for April.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Today: Partly to mostly cloudy, warmer, spotty pm shower High: 76

Sunday: A.M. spotty shower?, partly to mostly sunny Low: 53 High: 70

Monday: Partly to mostly cloudy Low: 43 High: 55 (51 Lakefront)

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, scattered showers Low: 42 High: 57 (53 Lakefront)

Wednesday: Partly to mostly cloudy, sct. shower possible Low: 45 High: 56 (51 Lakefront)

Thursday: Partly to mostly sunny Low: 42 High: 60 (55 Lakefront)

Friday: Partly to mostly cloudy, spotty shower? Low: 42 High: 56
