Heat Here But Humidity Held In Check

Highs reached to near 90° yesterday but it was a bit cooler at the beaches. July started off just as hot as June ended. The good news is the humidity never got too high. A pocket of dry air has settled in over the Chicago area and will remain here at least through tomorrow.

Today's highs should again reach to near 90° with lower 80s near the lakefront. This will be the eighth day in a row with temperatures above average. Highs should hit 90° or above for at least the next seven days in a row.

The forecast dew points for today in the middle to upper 50s for most areas. That is generally considered to translate into a comfortable range of relative humidity. Higher, more uncomfortable dew points stay well southwest of the Chicago area.

While this current weather pattern means plenty of sunshine it also is leading to the build up of pollutants at the surface since the lower levels of the atmosphere are stagnant. An air quality alert has been issued for the area through tonight. Elevated ozone levels have prompted an Air Quality Action Day.

Ozone Levels are expected to be at unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.

"Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" means-

Although general public is not likely to be affected at this AQI range, people with lung disease, older adults and children are at a greater risk from exposure to ozone, whereas persons with heart and lung disease, older adults and children are at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air.

More sunny, hot weather expected at least through the 4th of July. The GFS forecast doesn't bring in any decent chances of rain until Monday. The pattern then becomes more active with several chances of at least scattered thunderstorms next week.

The long range temperature probability forecast has consistently favored us for above average temperatures. The latest 6-10 and 8-14 day outlooks have us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from July 7th through the 15th.

Here is my 7 day forecast: Today: Sunny & hot High: 91 (82 Lakefront) Friday: Mostly sunny, hot Low: 70 High: 92 (84 Lakefront) Saturday: Mostly sunny, hot Low: 70 High: 91 (84 Lakefront) Sunday: Partly to mostly sunny Low: 71 High: 90 (83 Lakefront) Monday: Partly cloudy, sct. t-storm possible Low: 72 High: 91 (84 Lakefront) Tuesday: Partly cloudy, sct. t-storm possible Low: 72 High: 91 (86 Lakefront)
