Perfect Weather To Leaf Peep

Chicago's Fall Foliage Peak Almost Here

We are just days away by most estimates to the peak of fall colors here. The Illinois Office of Tourism says the second week of October is prime time to leaf peep.

SmokyMountains.com puts us at partial peak now with our neighbors just to the north in southern Wisconsin at near peak. Much of the upper Midwest to our north is somewhere between near peak and past peak.

This week will be a fantastic week for fall foliage viewing. The chances of rain are slim to none through next weekend and highs will be at least in the 60s with several days having highs in the 70s. It will be a quiet pattern in a month that can sometimes see chaotic weather.

Some Peeping Vantage Points

If you "wanna get away" though, Midwest Living has several suggestions of where you can take in the colors of fall. They have 30 suggestions on where to go with three of them found right here in Illinois. Michigan has the most mentions with four places recommended. The Upper Peninsula has mostly peaked but if you missed it, don't worry. Chicago photographer Barry Butler was there for the peak and he shared some beautiful shots via Twitter.

Mild The Rest Of The Month?

The first four days of October have featured highs only in the 50s. So far this month is coming in at nearly 7° above average. That streak of 50s should come to an end today with highs in the lower 60s.

Highs should be in the 60s or warmer through next weekend. The majority of those days will see highs in the 70s.

The longer range 6-10 day and 8-14 day temperature probability forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from October 19th through October 19th.

Looking even longer range the forecast suggests this flip to a mild pattern could continue through the end of the month. The 3-4 week temperature probability forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from October 17th through the 30th.

Great Time For A Car Wash

Six of the last seven days have recorded a trace of rain or more but the pattern is now set to change. The chances for rain are nearly nonexistent through next weekend.

The 6-10 day and 8-14 day precipitation probability forecast suggests we will have near normal rainfall from October 10th through the 19th.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Today: Sunny, a bit breezy, milder High: 62

Tuesday: Sunny, seasonably mild Low: 50 High: 70

Wednesday: Sunny, breezy Low: 56 High: 74

Thursday: Sunny skies Low: 50 High: 68

Friday: Mostly sunny, breezy Low: 52 High: 75

Saturday: Mostly sunny Low: 56 High: 77

Sunday: Sunny skies Low: 58 High: 73
