Drying Out & Warming Up By Memorial Day Weekend

We got soaked again on Sunday. Most of the Chicagoland area picked up at least an inch of rain and some spots saw nearly 4 inches in total. That was the second significant rain event in four days. Every river in northern Illinois is under some type of flood advisory or warning. 8.19" of rain has fallen at O'Hare so far this May. That is 6.2" above average. This May now ranks as the third wettest May on record and we still have 13 more days this month to get through! May has been a particularly moist month the past few years. 2019 holds the record for the most rainfall for the month with 8.25" and 2018 comes in second place just behind last year with 8.21". A pattern change will bring some relief for swollen and flooded rivers and streams this week.

The trend through Memorial Day weekend is for dryer and warmer weather. While we won't be rain free this week it will be mainly dry and milder with the warmest temps awaiting us this weekend. Spotty showers expected today and tomorrow (.1 to .3" of rain possible) with a few scattered showers or thunderstorms late Friday into early Saturday and then again late Sunday into early Memorial Day.

A breeze off the lake for several of the next seven days means cooler temperatures lakeside. Today we'll see middle 60s inland and middle 50s along the lakefront.

The real warm up hits this weekend with peak heat on Sunday. The GFS model is calling for highs in the lower to middle 80s but a bit cooler lakeside. It is still shaping up to easily be the warmest weekend of the year and possibly the warmest in nearly nine months.

No real changes in the longer range temperature forecasts. The pair of 6-10 day and 8-14 day temperature probability forecasts have consistently hinted at a return to a warmer pattern with the Midwest favored for above average temperatures overall for the end of the month.

Here is my 7 day forecast:
