Cooling Off For Weekend Then Warm Up Again Next Week

May started off just like April with temperatures much cooler than average. Ten of the first fifteen days of the month were below average. We flipped the switch towards warmer weather by the middle of the month. Since the 15th we have seen ten of the last twelve days come in above average. Today should be the 6th day in a row with a high of 80° or warmer. The scales have now been tipped towards above average temperatures overall for the month. May is now .6° warmer than average.

Today's highs should be near 80°. More cloud cover today will keep us about 7° cooler than yesterday.

Cooler air arrives for Friday and through the weekend. Expect 60s and 70s for highs from tomorrow through Monday. Saturday will be the coolest day during this period with highs in the upper 60s for most areas but failing to get out of the 50s lakeside.

Scattered storms dumped more May rain to add to the record total for the month. Rainfall this month for O'Hare has now reached 9.3". We have now smashed the previous May record rainfall of 8.25" set last year. I've circled the periods favored for some chances of rain over the next several days on the GFS meteogram for O'Hare. Some showers are possible early and later today but then an extended dry stretch expected Friday through Monday.

Indications are that after cooling off this weekend we will see a return to above average temperatures for the end of next week through almost the middle of June. Both the 6-10 day and 8-14 day temperature probability forecast has us outlooked for above average temperatures overall from June 2nd through June 10th.

There is a signal from the even longer range forecast that much of the country will turn cooler than average for the middle of June.
