Best Time To Be A Beach Bum

This has been a sizzler of a summer so far. June ended up around 5° above average. So far July is just under 6° above average. 9 of the first 19 days of the month have seen a high of 90° or hotter. Check out the longer range forecast below. It looks like the above average heat will keep coming through the end of the month.

Not surprising then is that Lake Michigan's water temperatures have been running well above average too. The average surface water temperature jumped from near 60° in late June to just over 75° on July 9th or close to 10° above average. That was after a stretch of 90° days. Since then Lake Michigan's temperature has fallen to 72° but is still around 5° above average.

Every one of the Great Lakes is running well above average and some have never been this warm at this point in the summer. At press time the water temperatures at the beaches in southern Lake Michigan were between 73° and 77°.

It will be a seasonably warm start to the week with highs in the middle 80s today but cooler upper 70s along the lakefront. Dew points have dropped from their highs Saturday near 80° to the lower to middle 60s. It will be only a little muggy on this Monday but definitely a break from the oppressive humidity we saw early in the weekend. Heat and humidity will build back by Friday and this weekend will be steamy.

Best chance of rain this week will come in the form of scattered showers and thunderstorms later Tuesday into Wednesday. Most of the week will be dry aside from that but a hit or miss shower or thunderstorm is possible Friday too. Next week could be a bit more active with more chances for storms Monday and again late Tuesday into Wednesday.

No signs of the heat letting up in the long range forecasts. Both the 6-10 and 8-14 day temperature probability forecast has Chicago favored for above average temperatures overall all right through the end of July and into the start of August.

Here is my 7 day forecast:

Today: Partly to mostly sunny High: 84 (78 Lakefront))

Tuesday: Partly to mostly cloudy, sct. showers & t-storms Low: 68 High: 83 (78 Lakefront)

Wednesday: Partly to mostly sunny, hit or miss shower/t-storm possible Low: 72 High: 86

Thursday: Partly to mostly sunny Low: 68 High: 84 (79 Lakefront)

Friday: Partly cloudy, hit or miss shower/t-storm possible Low: 70 High: 88

Saturday: Partly to mostly sunny, hot & humid Low: 74 High: 91

Sunday: Partly to mostly sunny, hot & humid Low: 75 High: 83
