After Record Rainfall Some Sun Today But More Storms Sunday

3.53" of rain fell at O'Hare Thursday smashing the previous record for the date of 1.95" set in 1945. It was not only the wettest calendar for May on record it was also the wettest day at the airport in over two and a half years. Two swaths of heavy rain fell across northern Illinois where totals reached to nearly five inches in spots.

A welcome break from the rain today and most of Saturday before another round of rain arrives Sunday. Some sun will emerge today to help push our highs into the 70s for the second straight day.

Sunday could be soggy with showers and thunderstorms then more scattered or spotty showers possible early next week, particularly on Monday. Timing is everything with a warmer and mainly dry Memorial Day weekend in the forecast. The O'Hare meteogram hints at some showers and thunderstorms early a week from this Sunday but most of the weekend would be rain free.

The next round of rain on Sunday should not be as heavy as Thursday's event. However, significant rain could fall with the GFS model suggesting anywhere between a half inch to nearly and inch and a half possible Sunday into early Monday morning. Some of the storms Sunday could be strong according to the Storm Prediction Center especially from the city and areas south and east.

The shift to warmer weather next week has been delayed just a bit but it will still be dramatic. Memorial Day weekend is still shaping up to be the warmest weekend in nearly 9 months.

80s will arrive by Saturday of the holiday weekend. We should see at least 70s for that following Sunday and Monday. Looking longer range the outlook is good for that warmer weather to stick around for a change. The temperature probability forecasts favor us to be above average overall from May 20th through the 28th.
